Now that the weather has changed, many people find themselves exposed to elements that can contribute to coughing and illness. It is important that while the weather continues to get colder and we face temperature extremes from indoor to outdoor environments, we take the time necessary to boost our immune systems. An annoying symptom of the body’s poor reaction to the environment is the onset of a cough.

A scratchy throat, swollen tonsils, buildup of phlegm and mucous are all reactions to allergens, extreme temperature changes or harmful chemicals. Severe and/or chronic coughing may be symptoms of something more serious in the body. But most often, the cough many people face during the fall and winter seasons are ugly additions to the common flu or cold. I have provided some healthy tips that may help you bolster your immune system to prevent the onset of an irritating cough and treat it if you find yourself battling the cough.

What To Look For

  • Scratching throat, mucous buildup, burning sensation in the lungs, swollen tonsils, irritation, runny nose, watery eyes.
  • Possible causes for a cough: a cold, flu, bronchitis, pneumonia, harsh chemicals, airborne toxins, certain medications, allergies, exposure to cigarette smoke, etc.
  • A cough that lingers longer than 3 weeks may be an indication of something more chronic and a possible infection or illness.

Healthy Tips

  • Visit your doctor for a checkup to find out potential causes for your cough.
  • Drink lots and lots of water to thin the mucous buildup in your throat.
  • Eat lots of fruit. A diet high in fruit fiber and flavanoids help prevent chronic coughing.
  • If you smoke, look for accountability and support to stop immediately.
  • Avoid places containing lingering cigarette smoke.
  • Reduce eating or drinking milk products as they contribute to phlegm buildup in your throat.
  • Eating garlic on a regular basis is a great antibiotic help.
  • If you believe certain medications you are taking are creating dryness or other factors contributing to coughing, talk to your doctor. He/she may change your prescription.
